From Ferdinand von Mueller to the West Australian   [Aug 1883]

[Sir Ferdinand v. Mueller, in a recent communication, speaks of the value which 'Black-boy' resin would prove as an article of export from Western Australia, calculated as it is to supersede Benzol resin for varnish manufacture and other purposes. Sir Ferdinand encloses a letter from a gentleman in Gippsland1 who states that near Braidwood2 he came across a lot of men gathering the gum who assured him that its value in Sydney was £80 per ton, and that they were making from 20s. to 30s. per diem gathering and selling to a local buyer. No colony of the group, probably, could export this resin on so large a scale ae3 Western Australia.]
