From Sidney Johnson to Ferdinand von Mueller   27 Aug 1883

Meredith1

Augt 27th2

Dear Sir

I send five more specimens of Desmid.3 I have collected many more, but on subjecting them to the microscope, I find them to be merely duplicates of others already sent.

Of the floral specimens No 4 was taken from a pond.

I see by the Argus that their New Guinea correspondent intends forwarding a number of fresh plants to you.4

Yours Truly

S. Johnson

Desmidieae

Vic.

Dated to 1883 on the basis of M's annotation.

Desmidieae? M was evidently sending these microscopic forms to Friedrich Kützing to name. There are several specimens said to have come from Meredith, presumably from Johnson, in the list in F. Kützing to M, 10 September 1882.

See Argus, 25 August 1883, p. 5.

Specimen folder from which MS was extracted not recorded. MS annotation by M: 'Answ 29/8/83 F.v.M.' Letter not found.
