From Charles Moore to Ferdinand von Mueller   31 Oct 1883

Sydney 31 Octr /83

My dear Baron

I have been so much away from home, and so much engaged otherwise that I really have not had time to reply to your letter respecting the Moreton Bay ash until the present. I may now state, that although I know this tree well, and am well acquainted with the northern parts of this colony, I never met with it in any part — nor have I heard of its being found far south of Brisbane.

I hope you have received Mr Betches specimens which may give you some new localities for species, but nothing new. Will you kindly give me the name of the enclosed. It was sent to me by a friend from the North Western districts — where it is called the "Dead Finish". It grows about eight feet high, so thickly that neither man nor beast can penetrate it. The flowers are said to be very sweet scented. I am looking anxiously forward to getting fruit specimens of those Encephalortos1 or Maczrozamias of which as yet I have only leaves, and as soon as these reach me you shall have specimens

Faithfully yours

Charles Moore

Baron Von Mueller K.C.M.G

PS I shall be glad if you will also inform me if you are quite satisfied that the true Eucalyptus Globulus is to be regarded as indigenous to this colony — or rather does it extend as far north as Jervis Bay2 —
