Mit letzter Post, verehrter Herr Professor, erhielt ich vom Admiral Acton die Nachricht, dass die von Ihnen so gütig zusammengelegten Algen glücklich angekommen seien, wofür er seinen Dank ausspricht, der aber nicht mir, sondern Ihnen gebührt. Jedenfalls wird dieser hohe Herr den Besitz authentischer Exemplare aus Ihrer Hand zu würdigen wissen, wie auch die anderen Recipienten. Jedenfalls sollten Sie aber nach aller Ihrer Mühe nicht leer ausgehen; — u. während ich Ihnen für die Rücksendung der Algen danke, die kürzlich angekommen sind, bitte ich Sie ganz besonders aus allen künftigen Sammlung irgend etwas, das Werth für Sie haben mag, zurückzubehalten.
Diesmal sende ich eine Kleinigkeit von Lutitt-Bay, eine kleine Meeresbuch1 nahe westlich der Einfahrt von Port Phillip.
Besten Dank für die Notiz über Linné's Namen, welche ich für die Linnean Soc. of New South Wales übersetzte.
Obgleich diese Zeilen erst lange nach dem Neujahr bei Ihnen eintreffen werden, möchte ich doch, da es jetzt gerade hier Jahreswechsel ist, Ihnen meine besten Glückwünsche zum neuen annuellen Abschnitt der Zeit aussprechen.

Von Bentham habe ich eben einen freundlichen u rührenden Brief, in welchem er seine gänzliche Abschwächung mittheilt, und gewissermassen von mir im Leben Abschied nimmt. — Mit ihm geht einer der grössten Phanerogamen-Systematiker aller Zeiten dahin!

By the last mail, respected Professor, I received news from Admiral Acton2 that the algae so kindly put together by you has arrived safely, for which he expresses his thanks, but which are due to you, not me. In any case this high gentleman will know to appreciate the possession of authentic specimens from your hand, like the other recipients. At least, however, you should not come away empty-handed after all your trouble — and while I thank you for the return of the algae that have arrived recently, I ask you quite particularly to retain from all future collections something that may have value for you.
This time I am sending a trifle from Loutit Bay,3 a small bay westerly of the entrance of Port Phillip.
Best thanks for the note about Linné's name, which I have translated for the Linnean Society of New South Wales.4
Although these lines will reach you only long after the New Year, yet I would like to express my best wishes for the new annual time period, because the change of year is just now here.

I have just received a friendly and touching letter from Bentham,5 in which he communicates his total weakening and as it were takes leave from me in life. — With him passes one of the greatest phanerogam systematists of all time!
