Chara scoparia (Bauer) β Mülleri A. Br.

— 31 Barwon prope Philippi 1883 Wilson

Chara gymnopitys A. Br. var. robusta Nordst. n. var.

Crassior, caule 1 mm. crasso. Folia verticlli 12-13, foliolis posterioribus non multo abbreviatio, sporangiis majoribus nudeo 0.69-70 mm longo.

Chara leptosperma A. Br. ?? var.

Stengel c. Antheridien circa 0.027 mm dick.

Monogr. d.

Folia verticilli 11. Foliola 5, posteriora breviora, anteriora Sporangium paullo superammia; nucleus sporangii 9 gyratus 0.37-42 mm longus, 0.24 mm latus.

Nitella microphylla A. Br. (?) f.

Verticilli fertiles in capitula minuta (diam. 2 mm) saepe conjexto interdum remoti. Sporangia non matura! Foliola simplicites 3-4 furceolata, tantum semel radium iterum divisum vidi!

Chara fragilis?

Chara gymnopitys A. Br. var. robusta Nordst. n. var.

Crassior, caule 1 mm. crasso. Folia verticlli 12-13, foliolis posterioribus non multo abbreviatio, sporangiis majoribus nudeo 0.69-70 mm longo.7

This form recalls more Ch. horrida than Ch. crinita. The secondary corticular tubicles of the stalk are usually narrower than the primary; but they are in general, although not always, developed everywhere. The spines are not numerous, usually shorter than the stem diameter, circ. 0.12-15 mm thick. Stipular crown horizontaly standing out, with up to 2 mm long pointed not bulbous cells. Leaves of 6 members, 2-3 nodes fertile. Foliola up to ½ as long as the sporangia, those behind only insignificantly shorter than those at front.

In the size of the sporangium this form agrees with γ acanthopitys A. Br. and δ trachypitys A.Br. but differs from the former by the size of the stem, by shorter spines and by several leaves in a whorl, and from the latter by unequally strengthened cortical tubercles, by leaves almost of the same length.

Coleochaete?

Chara gymnopus v. ceylonica

— do do 1882 E. Palmer

Chara leptosperma A. Br. ?? var.

Stem about ½ mm thick with triple number of corticular tubicles that are all nearly of equal thickness; those of the intermediate rows with horizontal or somewhat sloping boundary walls. Tubercles clear hemispherical (or nearly spherical) projecting, 0.75-0.1 mm thick. Stipular cells just as thick, up to 0.125 mm long, often hemispherical directed somewhat to the top. Stipular crown simple!; one sees nothing at all of a lower series (or quite exceptionally one small not protruding cell.) Leaf members 8-9, crusted (of fairly similar length) 4-5, of which 3-4 are fertile, upper not crusted 3-5, the topmost somewhat pointed. Foliola only on the crusted nodes, somewhat pointed. On the fertile nodes 4 foliola developed, the 2 foremost somewhat longer than the lateral, all shorter than the sporangia, 0.1 mm thick, those behind not developed or only semispherical tubercles. Sporangia nucleus 0.40-52 mm long, 0.35-37 mm thick; coronet 0.17-18 mm thick with 9-10 stripes, yellowbrown translucent (not black); coronet 0.17-18 mm thick, 0.75-85 mm high. Antheridia about 0.027 mm thick.

Because I have seen only very poor specimens of this form, I will not describe it as a new form or species. On account of its simple stipular crown this form should realy be put in "Haplostephand bistipulata monoine" but this section consists only of Ch. hydropitys9 sensu lato, which is either gymnopod or gymnophyll. On the other hand even in "Diplostephand" forms with little or no developed lower series of the stipular crown, e.g. in Ch. imperfecta from France (cf. Braun Fragm. ein Monograph der Char p. 137)10 and in Ch. fragilis (cf. A Braun in Kryptog. von Schlesien p. 410: "a lower series of weaker and only partly extended cells"). It seems to be most closely related to Ch. leptosperma A. Br. and Ch. fragilis Desc. It differs from both by simple stipular crown; from the former by smaller thicker sporangia, whose nucleus has 2 less stripes; from the latter by the yellow, not black somewhat smaller nucleus with even fewer stripes.

Mixed in also occur:

Chara gymnopus v. ceylonica und Chara sp. (Benthami C. Psilopitys α drummondi) Stipulae opposito (seme stipula supernumeraria (alternans) [erisa]). Folia verticilli 11. Foliola 5, posteriora breviora, anteriora Sporangium paullo superammia; nucleus sporangii .9 [gyrat...] 0.37-42 mm longus, 0.24 mm latus.

Chara fragilis? However, since the sporangia are not ripe and the stipular crown is simple, the determiantion is uncertain.
