To Jacob Agardh1    14 January 1884

14/1/84.

From this recently arrived letter you will see, highly esteemed Professor, that Admiral Acton has correctly received the algae that you so kindly gave him. That he did not write to you may be explained by the scare of the earthquake in the Bay of Naples2 and also through the accident of his son, who inflicted a gunshot wound on himself from unrequited love. However, the young lieutenant seems to be restored again.3

I am still suffering very much from my bronchial inflammation, but do hope to get better.

Respectfully and wishing you every good thing

Ferd. von Mueller

Admiral Acton previously had the Marine Ministry but gave up the portfolio to his brother.
