From Ferdinand von Mueller to Julius von Haast   30 Jan 1884

30/1/84.

30/1/84.

Permit me, dearest friend, to submit a recently arrived letter of Professor Wittstein to you.1 In Melbourne and Sydney there are no vacancies or other positions for this excellent son of my friend of many years. Would there perhaps be something acceptable for him in your island country?

I have been suffering chest complaints for six months. The deprivation of the Bot. Garden, senseless and cruel as this was, has confined me so very much to indoor work that I am now extraordinarily sensitive to colds and since both my parents died of phthisis of the lungs, my present condition is very serious, because the bad coughing has hardly eased at all over several months even though I took my writing work into the country for many weeks and to the coast.

It is to be hoped you are well and also yours. With best greetings your

Ferd. von Mueller.

Best thanks for your last splendid publications.2
