From Ferdinand von Mueller to Graham Berry   9 Feb 1884

Melbourne,

9/2/84.

The honorable Graham Berry, M.L.A.,

Chief Secretary.

Sir,

I have the honor to forward herewith an application addressed to me by Mr. Charles French,1 who is eager to fill the situation, which became vacant by the death of Mr. Charles Groener. As for ten years Mr. French was engaged under me in the botanic Gardens, I learnt to recognize his ability and zeal and general excellent character; and as he has a very extensive knowledge of plants and an usual2 aptitude for museum work (splendidly exemplified at the Melbourne International Exhibition) he would be singularly fitted to perform the duties, which in the position rendered vacant would devolve on him.3

I have the honor to be,

Sir, your obedient servant

Ferd. von Mueller.

Charles French Snr; see C. French to M, 8 February 1884 (in this edition as 84-02-08a).
