From Ferdinand von Mueller to the Exhibition Trustees, Melbourne   [Mar 1884]

[Promises of a large number of exhibits for the Manufacturers' Exhibition1 were reported, and letters were received from Baron von Mueller and Mr. Brough Smyth, agreeing to give the trustees their assistance in the formation of botanic and aboriginal collections.2]

One of a number of exhibitions displaying local products that were mounted in Melbourne's splendid Exhibition Building, constructed for the International Exhibition, 1880-1, but now vacant. See the call for entries in Age (Melbourne), 23 February 1884, p. 9, that also indicated that the trustees wished to form a permanent exhibition of manufactures.

Another report of the meeting included 'In reply to a communication from Sir F. Mueller, it was decided to inform him that a sum of £250 had been voted for the purpose of procuring a botanic collection' (Australasian (Melbourne), 8 March 1884. p. 807, col. a). M to W. Thiselton-Dyer, 18 May 1884, includes a brief comment on the exhibits.

Letter not found. The text given here is from a report of the meeting of the Exhibition Trustees held on 4 March 1884 (Leader, 8 March 1884, p. 28, col. a).
