From [Edith Thornton] to Ferdinand von Mueller   [Apr 1884]

[The other day, a few minutes after I had shot a brush turkey, in the dense brush of the Upper Orara River,1 I came upon a beautiful flowering tree which, with a large experience among the brushes of the colony, I had never seen before. …2 I have sent specimens to Mr. Moore of the Botanical Gardens, Sydney, and to Baron von Mueller, of Melbourne.]

NSW, near Grafton.

The omitted text is a description of a tree with large scarlet flowers, almost certainly Stenocarpus sinuatus, a specimen of which, recorded as collected by Miss E. Thornton at the Orara River in 1884, is now in the National Herbarium of Victoria (MEL 676462).

Letter not found. The text given here is from a letter 'from a correspondent' to the Daily telegraph (Sydney), 19 April 1884, p. 9.
