From Ferdinand von Mueller to Thomas Whitelegge   19 May 1884

19/5/84

The marine weed, dredged up in Sydney-Harbour, dear Mr Whitelegge, is the female plant of Halophila ovata, which genus I was the first to transfer from Najadeae to Hydrocharideae.1 I was not aware, that it grew at such a depth; it is a narrow-leaved form.

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.

I was not aware that the kind and learned and zealous Mr Ramsay had returned.2 When you see that excellent friend of mine, pray give him my best regards. Kindly ask him also, whether I could do anything for him.

Halophila ovata

Hydrocharideae

Najadeae

M maintained Halophila in Najadeae in B75.13.10, but listed it under Hydrocharideae in B83.03.04, p. 115, without a citation to the transfer.

Ramsay visited Europe in 1883-4.
