Letter not found. The text given here is from Bulletin de la Société nationale d'acclimatation de France, series 4, vol. 2, p. 321 (1885). The letter is dated to January 1885 as the latest likely date that the volume could have been sent to be announced at the meeting of 10 March 1885. On 16 December 1884, the Premier, J. Service, approved the distribution of copies of the decade through the Trustees of the Public Library. However, the Government Printer had already distributed copies to institutions that had received copies of the previous Decades (see notes to M to G. Berry, 9 November 1884, which included the Society on the list of recommended recipients; M was notified of the approval in E. Thomas to M, 24 December 1884). It is not known whether M wrote to the Society to announce the gift independently of the official distribution.
