From Ferdinand von Mueller to Eduard Hackel   28 Jan 1885

28/1/85

Accept my best thanks, highly esteemed Professor, for your kind letter of 10 December1 and the information that you give me on the grasses of the Andropogon group. How splendidly you explain everything! Your monograph of the Gramineae2 will be a lasting resource for phytography! When one has to master the whole of the phanerogam kingdom, as I here, with about 9000 Australian species, it is impossible to enquire into every group with thorough exactitude, even if the comparative material and the entire literature were available here.

Meanwhile a small problem has arisen for the further sending of Australian grasses from here that must first be overcome. The note, that is about what was sent in the first instance, is mislaid in my museum, therefore it will be necessary that you kindly inform me from which genera you received contributions from me up to now. Then the searching can be further advanced alongside other work, although here we are sometimes very pressed with regard to time. In a young colony everything happens in a rush!

In the recently published Detroit edition of Select Plants,3 Dactylis caespitosa is noted as Poa forsteri (Steudel). The important explanations that you give me about some useful grasses shall be used for the next edition, which will probably be soon and indeed published in Melbourne.4 In the future I will also gladly look forward to and publicly acknowledging such communications.

Respectfully and wishing you every good thing

Presumably Hackel (1889).

B84.13.22.

B85.12.03. M inserted entries in this edition on two additional species of Andropogon, namely A. nardus (replacing an extremely brief entry under A. ivarancusa) and A. provincialis, in both cases acknowledging Hackel for information supplied. He also amended the entry on A. cernuus, which he had described in previous editions as perennial, now indicating that, according to Hackel, it was an annual.

Correspondent inferred from content of letter. Hackel was a specialist on grasses, information from whom M acknowledged in his Select plants (see n. 5).
