Nur wenige Worte diesmal, edler Freund, um für die prächtigen Schriften zu danken, welche mit letzter Post ankamen. Welche unendliche Arbeitskraft Sie noch immer entwickeln! Welche Fülle neuer Pflanzen, wieder durch Ihren vortrefflichen Sohn zusammen gebracht! —

Ich sende eben durch eine Agentur an Herrn Maximowicz ein Packet getrockneter Pflanzen versuchsweise ab, u. diese sollten dort frei ankommen. Wenn sich dieser Weg des Sendens gut bewährt, könnte bald mehr nachkommen. Unter den Exemplaren wird das Meiste wohl schon aus früheren Sendungen in dem Museum Ihres Gartens sein, u. könnte was Sie nicht brauchen ja in das Herbarium der Kais. Akademie kommen.

Da Herr Staatsrath Trautvetter, wie ich sehe, sich besonders mit statistischer Botanik von Russland befasst, könnte er uns nicht etwas ähnliches liefern als Conspectus der russischen Flora sowohl Europas als Asiens, wie es von mir für Australien im Census gethan, falls Sie in Ihrer Anstalt nicht etwa Ähnliches selbst zusammen stellen wollen. Es würde doch den Überblick über die vielen Tausende russisch Pflanzen sehr erleichtern.

Only a few words this time, noble friend, to thank you for the wonderful publications that arrived with the last mail.¹ What infinite energy you display still! What a wealth of new plants, again collected by your excellent son!

I am just sending a parcel of dried plants to Mr Maximowicz through an agency as an experiment, which should arrive there free of charge. Should this way of sending prove to be satisfactory, more could soon follow. Most of the species are probably already represented in the Museum of your Gardens from earlier consignments, and anything you do not want can easily go to the herbarium of the Imperial Academy.

As I see that Privy Councillor Trautvetter deals mainly with the statistical botany of Russia, could he not produce for us a conspectus of the flora of Russia, European as well as Asian, similar to what I have done for Australia in my Census,² unless you yourself want to compile something like that in your institute. It would greatly facilitate surveying the many thousands of Russian plants.
