I took the liberty, dear Mr Ramsay, to send to your adress a copy of the American Edition of my "select plants"1 elegantly bound as a souvenir for Dr Froude, whom to meet here I had not the pleasure, as I was ill during most of the time of his stay here.2 I did not like the distinguished visitor to leave our shores without a mark of attention from me. Thinking that you would be sure to meet the great Historian, I sent the presentation copy to your adress, but hearing neither from you nor Dr Froude, I am afraid it got miscarried.3
