To Graham Berry    24 June 1885

Melbourne

24/6/85

The honorable Graham Berry, M.L.A.,

Chief Secretary.

Sir

I have the honor to inform you, that his Excellency Capt. Moloney, Governor of Gambia, in a letter received by last mail (hereto affixed)1 has asked me, to send to him seeds of Eucalypts for trial-culture in that colony. Having procured various sorts I beg to forward them to you, deeming it right that the sending should be made as a direct presentation from the Victorian Government.

I further beg to send herewith an answer letter,2 and would also beg to suggest, that a copy of the Eucalyptography may be added to this sending.3

I have the honor to be,

Sir, your obedient servant

Ferd. von Mueller.

See A. Moloney to M, 16 April 1885 (in this edition as 85-04-16a).
See M to A. Moloney. 24 June 1885.
On 26 June 1886, T. Wilson, Under Secretary, forwarded M's letter, with the enclosure, to the Premier, James Service, with the minute: 'Submitted by direction to the Honorable the Premier with regard to the proposed presentation of a copy of the Eucalyptographia'. Service approved the request on 29 June 1885 and on 16 July E. Thomas, Secretary to the Premier, minuted: 'Returned to the Under Secretary. — Mr Wilson was informed by letter from this Office dated 6th instant of the action taken in regard to the within matter'. In his letter of 6 July, Thomas informed Wilson that the Premier had 'approved of the proposed presentation' and the Librarian at the Public Library had been instructed to send a copy of Eucalyptograhia to Gambia along with the seeds as soon as Wilson forwarded them to him. The letter with the presentation was to state that it was being 'made at the instance of the Government Botanist' (C85/6724, unit 192, VPRS 3992/P, PROV).
