To Joseph Hooker   2 October 1885

2/10/85.

Last evening, dear Sir Joseph, I had the pleasure to meet your clever young son.1 I shall do all, that is within my power, to promote his interest. I introduced him myself this day to Dr Mein, a medical Gentleman of great wealth and influence and of generous disposition, who may be able to push him here in professional work; but my own impression is that he will do better in N.S. Wales, where Mr Wilkinson,2 the Gov. Geologist, may readily avail himself of your sons talents and experience for Gov. Reports; Mr W. is Gov Geologist of N.S. W. and when three days ago I got your letter,3 announcing your sons departure I wrote immediately to Mr Wilkinson,4 urging to give the young Gentleman at once some Gov. work, which - since in Victoria the Civil Service Board was created - is far more difficult. It was quite charming to me, to hear your son speak such excellent German.

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller

It is delightful to see you have finished another vol. of the Indian Flora.5 I will study the new part, kindly sent; these studies are generally about midnight-hours in my retiring room.
