I am very sorry that owing to an accident which has confined me to the house for three weeks I shall be unable to be present at the meeting of the Geographical Society this evening.

As I had the misfortune to write Captain Everill's obituary1 I ought to join with the other members of our Society in congratulating him on his return

Everill commanded Bonito in an expedition up the Fly River in New Guinea in 1885. In November of that year, alarming reports were received that the entire party had been killed by the natives, but these proved to be unfounded and the expedition arrived safely back in Brisbane on 29 November. The initial reports, however, prompted a long article by Thomas, under his pseudonym 'The Vagabond', in the Argus, 9 November 1885, p. 6 (reprinted in the Australasian, 14 November 1885, supp., p. 1).
