Besten Dank, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, für Ihre gütige Übersendung der neuen wichtigen Algen Abhandlung. Es war mir besonders angenehm, dass Sie auch meiner dabei öffentlich gedachten; denn es ist meines Departements wegen wichtig, dass mein Wirken auch in dieser Richtung vor die Öffentlichkeit kommt. Als Ausländer ist es um so schwerer für mich, in einer englischen Colonie meinen Stand zu behaupten.

Dass unseres Freundes Wilson's Sammlungen stets die wichtigsten von hier bleiben werden, ist sehr erklärlich. Er verbringt einen grossen Theil seiner Ferienzeit in eigenem Boote mit Schleppnetz, und wohnt in Geelong der Mündung von Port Phillip nahe. Er lässt es sich auch alljährlich ziemlich viel Geld kosten diese Sammelreisen zu machen, welche auch auf seine besonderen Lieblinge die Polyzoa verwandt sind. Für mich im Amt giebt es keine Ferien!

Webbs Pflanzen sind stets erkauft, u meistens nicht von ihm selbst gesammelt. Aber ich treibe alle Correspondenten an den Australischen Küsten u selbst in Neu Guinea zum Algensammeln an. Es kostet immerhin manche Ausgabe u recht viel Zeit für mich

Best thanks, highly esteemed Professor, for your kind transmission of the new important algae paper.¹ It was particularly pleasing to me that you also made mention publicly of my involvement, since it is important on account of my Department that my work also in this direction comes before the public. As a foreigner it is so much more difficult for me to maintain my position in an English colony.

That our friend Wilson's² collections will always remain the most important from here is very understandable. He spends a large part of his holiday time in his own boat with drag-net and lives in Geelong near the mouth of Port Phillip. He also pays out rather much money annually to make these collecting journeys, which are also spent on his particular favourite the polyzoa. For me in office there are no holidays!

Webb's³ plants are always purchased and mostly not collected by him himself. But I urge on all correspondents on the Australian coast and even in New Guinea to algal collecting. All the same it costs much expenditure and very much time for me.
