Last night, dear Mr Macdonald, I received the byefollowing telegram, which I copied partly for the press,1 and sent a congratulatory reply.2

I telegraphed last evening to Rev J. Chalmers about Forbes.3

O.] Forbes, stating that, as there is no prospect of the necessary funds [for a further expedition to New Guinea] being contributed during the present season, he has accepted an appointment under the Queensland Government'.
