Dear Baron Mueller,
I am making a quantitative examination of the tanning power of various Australian (chiefly N.S.W.) astringents. I am using several methods (for comparison), including your chromic oxide method as given in your translation of Dr Wittstein's work.2
I should be very glad if you would kindly help me to procure samples of astringent barks, leaves &c & I want particularly the date of collections of the bark in each case. Perhaps Mr Bauerlen would be able to help, if I had his address, and I could learn from him what would be the cost of getting together a number of samples.
Yours truly,
J. H. Maiden.
The Baron Ferd. von Mueller K.C.M.G., F.R.S.
