To Alfred Deakin1    28 July 1886

28.7.86.

The Hon. Alfred Deakin M.L.A.,

Chief Secretary.

Sir,

In reply to the question asked by the Hon. Dr. Dobson in Parliament, I have the honor to state, that Part II of the Key of Victorian plants2 is ready since some time and obtainable at the Gov. Printing Office, and that part one will be finis[h]ed in some months, if the Gov. Printing Office can publish soon the manuscript after its completion.3

I have the honor to be,

Sir, your obedient servant

Ferd. von Mueller.

The file also includes a typed copy of M's letter. When Dobson’s foreshadowed question concerning the publication of M’s Key was asked on 10 August ( Hansard , vol. 52, pp. 1029-30) the response given by H. Cuthbert (Minister of Justice) was to quote this letter, and to add that he had also 'a long letter from Baron von Mueller giving sundry reasons why Part 2 had come out before Part 1'. See also M to A. Deakin, 28 July 1886 (in this edition as 86-07-28a), the ‘long letter’ to which Cuthbert referred.

Part I was not published for a further two years; see B88.13.03.
