Mit dieser Post, geehrter Herr Doctor, sende ich Ihnen eine Anzahl Characeen, die noch unbennant in meiner Sammlung liegen, u. die Sie bei Ihrer grossen Erfahrung wohl leicht benennen können. Was numerirt ist, kann selbstverständlich bei Ihnen bleiben. Neues möchte sich wohl nicht unter diesen Pflanzen finden, aber immerhin werden Ihnen solche doch manchen weiteren Nachweis über die Verbreitung der Arten geben.

Ich kann auch noch immer nicht mit der Idee befreunden, dass die Characeen den Algen am nächsten stehen sollen; die Fruchtbildung ist eine so hoch entwickelte, dass ich viel eher an einen Anschluss an Rhizospermae denken möchte. So auch huldige ich nicht der neuen Lehre, dass die Verwandschaft der Coniferen am nächsten zu den Lycopodiaceen sei. Wenn ich doch die viele Dicotyledenen-Keimung ausgesäeten Conif. beobachte, u wo solche polycotyledenar ist mit derjenigen der Persoonia Arten vergleiche, wird es mir unmöglich die Conif hinter die Monocotyledenen zu stellen.

Die schönen Abildungen von Hymenomycetin, welche die Akademie von Stockholm als Reliquie des grossen Elias Fries herausgab, habe ich auch käuflich für meine Anstalt erworben.

Sollten Sie Hr. Prof Berggren gelegentlich begegnen, so bitte ich Sie ihm meinen besten Gruss zu entbieten, und ihn zu fragen, ob ich ihm etwas Litterarisches oder Moose &c &c senden könnte.

With this post, esteemed Doctor, I am sending you a number of Characeae that still lie unnamed in my collection, and that you can probably easily name with your great experience. What is numbered can of course remain with you. New things may probably not be found among these plants, but at any rate they will surely give you much further information about the distribution of species.

I still cannot get used to the idea that the Characeae are to stand next to the algae; the fruit structure is one so highly developed that I would like to think more on a connection to the Rhizospermae. Thus I also do not subscribe to the new teaching that the relationship of the conifers is closest to the lycopods. When I observe the dicotyledonous germination of many sown conifers, and where it is polycotyledonous compared with that of Persoonia species, it is impossible for me to place the conifers behind the monocotyledons.

I have also obtained by purchase for my institute the beautiful figures of Hymenomycetes that the Academy of Stockholm published as relics of the great Elias Fries.¹

Should you at some time meet Professor Berggren, I ask you to offer him my best greetings and to ask him whether I could send him anything literary or mosses &c &c.
