To Eduard von Regel   9 August 1886

9/8/86

Allow me to express my best wishes for your approaching birthday, noble friend,1 and with the congratulation let me combine the sincere desire, that divine Providence will preserve you for a long time yet in cheerful vigour for science and for your dear family.

It was my intention to accompany my congratulations by the dedication of a beautiful plant, but during recent months I have not or have hardly been able to work on the Papuan collections, as I am pressed officially here to deliver a Key to the system of Victorian plants for excursions, so that just now I have to devote any free hours to this work. The dedication will certainly be made during the course of this year.2

Your splendid publication on Eremostachys 3has reached me. What a beautiful contribution to the elaboration of the system of the Russian flora!

My illustrations of the Myoporineae are at long last almost completed at the binder's,4 and I hope to be able to send you a copy with the next mail.

I will bear your request for fibre plants in mind. The London Exhibition5 has exhausted everything. Nothing indigenous here can compete with your flax and hemp, either in rapid production or in strength, or in ease of handling; but the New Zealand Phormium, Boehmeria nivea, can be cultivated here, and some others are of practical use as well as being worth the trouble.

Always your

Ferd. von Mueller.
