Eben am Gouvern. Posttag für Europa, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, langt Ihr freundlicher Brief v. 27. Juni an. Es ist mir im Gewoge der heutigen Departements Arbeiten nicht möglich, Ihnen gleich eingehend zu antworten; es soll aber bald geschehen.

Es war doch nur die blosse Gerechtigkeit, dass ich in meiner letzten Präsidenten-Rede auf den unvergleichlichen Einfluss, welchen die Perthes-Anstalt durch 100 Jahre ausgeübt, mit Anerkennung hinwies.

Ich bin ganz stolz darauf, dass Sie meinem annuellen Vortrag ein solches Lob spenden; vielleicht eignet sich die eine oder andere Notiz als neu für Übersetzung in Ihre schönen Mittheilungen.

Ich bin ganz gerührt, dass eine junge Dame in einer so hochsinnigen Weise die Arbeiten unseres unvergesslichen Freundes an Ihrer Anstalt mit fortsetzt. Ich sandte Fräul. Behm die neueste Ausgabe der "Select plants" besonders, weil der geographische Pflanzen-Index immerhin auch für allgemeine Erdkunde Interesse hat.

Lassen Sie meinen besten Gruss dem Herrn Hofrath Perthes entboten sein.

Beigefügtes Blatt mag Ihnen einige annehmbare Data für die Mittheilungen geben.

Your kind letter of 27 June1 just arrived on the government mail day for Europe, highly esteemed Professor. In the surge of today's departmental work it is not possible for me to answer you immediately in detail; but it shall soon happen.

It was certainly just mere justice that I referred in my last presidential address with acknowledgment to the incomparable influence that the Perthes-Anstalt exerted through 100 years.2

I am quite proud that you give such praise to my annual lecture; perhaps one or other of the notes are suitable as new for translation in your fine Mittheilungen.

I am quite touched that a young lady continues the work of our unforgettable friend3 in such a high-minded manner at your institution as well. I sent Miss Behm the latest edition of the Select plants 4in particular because after all the geographical plant index also has interest for general geographical study.

Present my best greetings to Hofrath Perthes.

The enclosed paper5 might give you some acceptable data for the Mittheilungen.

In his annual address to the Victorian Branch of the Geographical Society of Australasia, delivered on 18 January 1886 but not published until the following year (B87.05.03), M referred effusively (pp. 41-3) to the centenary of Justus Perthes' Geographischer Anstalt. It would seem that M sent a copy of his address to Gotha, prior to its formal publication. See also M to E. Perthes, 21 October 1885.
