To James Hector   4 September 1886

4/9/86.

Let me thank you, dear Dr Hector, for the copy of your splendid Report on N.Z. Ichthyology as regards utilitarian purposes.1 I have handed it to the Chairman of the antarctic Committee, and it strengthens my proposition that a summer-tour should be made to Macquarie-Island with the view of prearranging for an antarctic Expedition-Depot there. You may have seen, what I said about the antarctic Islands for occupation in my Presidential adress at the geogr. Soc here in January last.2 I have advised Capt Armstrong, R.N., to prepare some proposition, to initiate settlements on Auckl. and Campb. Isl.,3 and he will likely communicate with you on the subject soon.

I was since some years aware, that a Cyttaria existed on your Beech-trees from hearsay, but could never get a specimen; but Mr Buchanan has now described it.4 So you have one more good native fungus as edible. Your note on the Exidia auricula Judae shall be used for the next edition of the "select plants".5 I will get a copy for you (in a day or two) of the last edition.6 I still think, one ought to be brought out for NZ.

Regardfully your

Ferd von Mueller
