From Ferdinand von Mueller to William Bacchus   [1887]

[Besides, there is another thistle very like the "carduus avernis,”1 and inexperience may lead to mistakes. I do not know the name of this thistle, although the late lamented Mr. W. H. Bacchus showed me in 1887 a letter he had from the learned Baron Von Mueller, describing the proportions, but owing to the peculiar caligraphy neither of us were able to decipher the name—but read "It is a native of western South America, and will not do great harm."]

Carduus avernis

Carduus arvensis?

Letter not found. The text given here is from a letter to the editor by D. Ryan, complaining that the Thistle Act was not being enforced, in Bacchus Marsh express, 7 April 1888, p. [3]. M's letter may have been written earlier than 1887.
