To Eduard von Regel   12 January 1887

12/1/87

I still have to offer you my sincere best wishes, noble friend, for the turn of the year in our Christian era. May then the new annual epoch of time, which we have entered now, bring only joy to you and those so dear to you! With your robust good health you will be able to enjoy many a year of contented living, something I cannot say for myself. May you reach the age of Chevreul, with the same staunch good health and mental power! I should have liked to have had a dedication from the Papuan flora to accompany this felicitation, but I have been so besieged with strictly official duties in the Department, that I have been able to do but little work on the New Guinea plants, and first had to do justice to the committee members for exploration.1 But you will certainly be remembered in 1887, when I should have more time to work on new plants than during the last year.2

The small branch you sent me represents Eucalyptus linearis of Dehnhardt, whose original specimens yours resemble. It seems to me to be a form of E. amygdalina, produced by cultural conditions. So far we have found nothing like it in a native habitat.

Respectfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.

During 1886 M honoured several members of the Exploration Committee of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia by naming Papuan plants after them, e.g. Medinilla maidenii(B86.01.01, p. 8) and Trematanthera dufaurii (B86.10.02, p. 71).
M described Metrosideros regelii in B89.13.11.
