11/3/87.
Rob. Watson Esqr.,
Engineer in Chief of Victorian Railways.
Dear Sir:
The branchlets with fruit of the Eucalyptus, marked C, just submitted to me, is of E. goniocalyx.1 It passes under various names, but generally as Spotted Gum-tree. This has been pointed out in my work on the Eucalypts of Australia.2 The timber of this species is durable and in many respects excellent, particularly when the tree grows in well drained sloping localities.
Of the samples A & B no branchlets are forwarded along with the pieces of wood. I should like to see such branchlets with flowerbuds and fruits, as that would much facilitate arriving at a safe conclusion as to the value of these two kinds of timber.
With regardful remembrance your
Ferd. von Mueller.3
