See T. Wilson to M, 4 May 1887 (in this edition as 87-05-04b).

MS annotation in an unknown hand: 'note to Mr Luehmann 6/5'. On 12 May 1887 Luehmann sent a telegram to James Killen, accountant in the Finance department of the Chief Secretary's office: 'No Revenue in the Dept of Govt Botanist for 1887'. He sent another telegram on 19 May: 'No Pensions nor Gratuities in Govt Botanists Dept. for 1887.8 [i.e.:1887/8] as stated in letter'.

The file contains a newspaper cutting from the Argus, 14 October 1887, reporting the parliamentary discussion of the 'vote of £2,748 for the Government botanist', which was passed. M's valuable contribution to the colony was extolled and the need for 'a proper botanical museum' was endorsed.

Each of these amounts are marked with a note by Luehmann: 'Salary above maximum'.

MS annotation by Luehmann: 'With quarters (one room) valued at £18 per annum.'
