Lassen Sie meinen besten Glückwunsch ausgesprochen sein, theuerer Freund, zu Ihrer Erhebung durch Ihren gnädigen Herrscher u seinen geheimen Rath; u lassen Sie mich hoffen, dass bei Ihrer kräftigen Gesundheit Sie durch viele Jahre auch diese neue Ehre lange geniessen mögen. Ich bewundere stets Ihre rastlose Thätigkeit, die sich in so vielfältiger Weise ausdrückt.
Wenn ich nach einigen Wochen den dichotomous Key für die Benennung oder vielmehr die Namens Auffindungen der 1900 Arten, 550 Gattungen u 104 Ordnungen der Pflanzen Victorias werde fertig haben, dann hoffe ich mit wenig Unterbrechung an den Pflanzen Neu Guineas fortarbeiten zu können, u soll Ihnen dann auch eine schöne papuanische Widmung werden!
Sie wundern sich, dass die lithographischen Arbeiten einigermassen rasch bei mir vorwärtsschreiten, u dass ich dafür Mittel habe. Das Departement wird verhältnissmässig billig verwaltet, u durch Sparsamkeit ist es mir möglich, so Manches durch die Presse zu bringen. Da ich allein bin im Leben, u meine persönlichen Bedürfnisse der einfachsten Art sind, bleibt von meinem Einkommen immer etwas, um manche Ausgaben in der Anstalt selbst zu tragen, die sonst den Fond für Lithographen beeinträchtigen würden

Allow me to express my sincere congratulations, dear friend, on your elevation by your gracious Sovereign and his Council;1 and let me hope that, with your robust good health, you may enjoy this new honour for a long time to come. I always admire your indefatigable activity, which is finding expression in so many directions.
When I have completed the dichotomous key2 for the naming or rather for the finding of names of the 1900 species, 550 genera and 104 orders of the plants of Victoria in a few weeks time, I hope to continue working on the plants of New Guinea with little interruption, and then you will receive a beautiful Papuan dedication!
You are surprised that my lithographic work progresses fairly rapidly, and that I have the means for it. The administration of the Department is relatively cheap, and through thrift I am able to get many a publication through the press. As I stand alone in life, and as my personal requirements are extremely simple, something always remains over from my salary, and I can carry many expenses in the institute myself, which otherwise would reduce my vote for lithographers.
