Maiden's letter, sent to Bäuerlen at ‘Lyttleton’ [i.e.Littleton, NSW], stated: 'I have the honour to inform you that a pass on New South Wales Railways, available between Sydney and Bourke, from the 15th July to the 31st October next, has been obtained by the Committee of Management through the intermediary of the Honourable the Minister for Public Instruction. The pass is in my keeping, and will be handed to you on your arrival in Sydney prior to starting for the North West.' (MRS 7/2/40, Powerhouse Museum).
