Your Tillaea interests me much, dear Mr Deane, and it seems quite new; thus I will name it after you;1 it is nearest to T. macrantha & to a S. African species. Kindly send me some more specimens when the fruits are ripening, so I can compare the seeds critically.2 I am just sending the msc of the "Key I"3 to the press, so that a copy can likely be sent you in October.
Please look for Aldrovanda as perhaps there or in Riverina4 entangled among floating Utriculariae
Regardfully
your
Ferd von Mueller.
Have you no friends in Central Austr, who at this marvellous season would collect all sorts of plants, particularly also the minute spring-annuals and saltbushes, and send dried branchlets in flower or fruit by successive mails.5
Aldrovanda
Tillaea macrantha
M did not describe a Tillaea in Deane's honour (IPNI, accessed 14 November 2024).
There are two specimens of Tillaea collected by Deane at MEL, stored under Crassula decumbens var. decumbens. MEL 90509, dated August, has Deane's descriptive field note that does not mention fruits and MEL 90722, dated September has Deane's field note that some of the fruits appear ripe. T. macrantha as a synonym of C. decumbens var decumbens (APC, accessed 14 November 2024)

A note says there was a sketch with this letter but, if so, it has not been found.
