To William Henry Archer1    17 October 1887

17/10/87

I will gladly write to the L.S.,2 dear Chev. Archer, and ask as a favor, that you be reelected instead of being readmitted, as in the latter case you would have to pay for all the latter years the full subscription;3 it is however right to mention, that the L.S. has increased lately the entrance fee and also the annual payment.

Under these circumstances perhaps you would prefer to become a Fellow of the R. Geogr. Soc4 of London; if so, I will at once propose you.

Regardfully your

Ferd von Mueller

'Key' is — as regards the dichotomous descriptive part — nearly half through the press, and — deo volente5 — will appear in a few weeks;6 the illustrated geographic part came out last year.7 Your fern is Grammitis rutifolia, RBr

Linnean Society, London.
Archer was elected a Fellow on 5 November 1874; see postscript dated 25 March 1874 to M to G. Bentham, 21 March 1874. Archer's name last appeared on the 'Fellows list' for 1882. He is not listed among the Fellows 'withdrawn' in the reports of the anniversary meetings of 24 May 1882 or 24 May 1883, so presumably did not formally withdraw but ceased to pay his subscription.
Royal Geographical Society.
God willing.
In the event, publication was delayed and the work did not appear until late 1888; see B88.13.03.
