From Ferdinand von Mueller to Maurice Holtze   4 May 1888

4/5/88

4 May 1888

I was very glad, dear Mr Holtze, to hear from you again by mail, for, — even though I knew that you were overly burdened with official duties, — I believed or feared already nonetheless that you were ill. In accordance with your wishes I have immediately written in your interest to my university friend Krichauff,1 and have asked him to apply himself also to Mr Basedow and Mr Homburg in favour of the Minister's intention to make £800 annually available to you for wages. The latter visited me here recently, and I used the opportunity to praise your excellent management of the Gardens there.

Many thanks for the promised seed of Eucalyptus miniata.2 Following your note, I will now add this species to the new enlarged edition of the 'Select plants'.3 Does it also produce kino? I expect the growth is slow? Eucalyptus phoenicea probably does not occur so far west. The colour of its flowers is the same as with E. miniata.

Fresh rooted plants of Panicum spectabile4 will be dispatched to you with the next mail. In case the first attempt at sending them fails, that can be repeated.

Should a good opportunity offer, I would advise you to also send fresh seed of Manihot glazioui5 to the Governor of Fiji, Sir John Thurston, because His Excellency has a practical interest in the culture of useful tropical plants, and has only recently advised me here on such, and has received from me many rare things over the course of the years,6 so that he could send you quite a lot, and much that is useful at that.

I would greatly welcome fresh seed of Acacia arabica7 for distribution to correspondents far away in the interior. As Euchlaena luxurians does not ripen its seed here in the south, I have to rely on you also to obtain fresh stock. Did Medicago scutellata and M. orbicularis do any good with you? It should do well there, particularly on calcareous ground. Of several of the Acacias of North-West Australia material of fruiting specimens is still lacking to complete my work

With best wishes for your well-being

Ferd. von Mueller.

When you have a little more time, you could perhaps send me a few notes on your new Gardens for a German trade journal.

Some slightly dried juice of Manihot glazioui would be very welcome for the International Exhibition.8

After the opening of the International Exhibition I will once more resume or continue work on Australian plants.

Dried berries of Vitis acetosa would provide me with viable seed for distribution.

M lists this species, under Manihot glazioui, in his editions of Select Plants from B83.13.06; cultivation by Holtze at Port Darwin is first mentioned in B85.12.03; the usual spelling is Manihot glaziovii, the name given in the description in Martius (1840-1906), vol. 11, part 2, p. 446.

Numerous letters from Thurston dating from February 1879 to April 1886 are transcribed in this edition; no letters from M to Thurston have been found.

Seed was sent, and acknowledged in M to M. Holtze, 20 October 1888 (in this edition as 88-10-20a).
