It seems, dear Mr Crawford, that under the enormous pressure of work, much augmented by the extra-duties for the Exhibition,1 I omitted to acknowledge the receipt of the sample of Olea paniculata wood, so kindly sent by you. I keep usually til near midnight on my writing table, and yet I cannot always do justice to the overwhelming work. Best thanks for this additional kindness. The larger piece of wood came also all right and is appreciated. How can I thank you for all your goodness. I am not sure, whether you cultivate the Sainfoin there, so I send some seeds. Say, if the true "Coapim" grass, Panicum spectabile, would be acceptable, there, for mild regions; if you not have it already, I could send you a fresh root. What the Adelaide bot Garden sent out for years as Coapim and reported on officially in print is the common Haleppo-Grass.
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.
The new edition of the Select plants,2 enlarged as it will be, is likely to exceed 500 octavo-pages; so I doubt, whether it can be brought through the press much before the end of the year, when I will forward a copy to you.
