To Odoardo Beccari   11 October 1888

11/10/88

Through an Accident, I had, dear Dr Beccari, by falling from a tramcar, I was laid up for some time.1 This and the great extra calls on my attention for the Centennial Exhibition2 must excuse it, that the parcel, intended for you, went only this day. It has been sent through the Agency of Tate’s Firm here, and should reach you free of expense.

I had the honor to be in Sydney elected for the Melbourne meeting of the Austral Assoc. for the Advancement of Science in 1889 President.3

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller

My Key is just ready (Vict pl.) and will be sent to you through the public Library4

The accident was on the evening of 31 July 1888 (M to T. Wilson, 1 August 1888), and Mueller remained bedridden for a month (see M to W. Haswell, 31 August 1888).
Mueller was appointed as one of many ‘extra commissioners’ to the Royal Commission responsible for the ‘Centennial International Exhibition, Melbourne, 1888’ (Victoria Government Gazette, 17 May 1887, p. 1297), and was also a juror.
M was President of the 2nd meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, held in Melbourne, January 1890.
