From Ferdinand von Mueller to Thomas Wilson   15 Nov 1888

15/11/88

This day, dear Mr. Wilson, I received a few early stitched impressions of Key I;1 so I beg to send one to our honorable Chief, to whom it is dedicated, through you.2

By an oversight a small map of Victoria has not been glued in, which of course will be done in the bulk of the copies.

The "Select plants,” 7th Edition,3 are completely printed, indeed a few weeks ago they were finished; but the binding is not yet done, but I trust to forward copies next week.

Regardfully your

Ferd von Mueller

I hoped to have seen you and your kind Lady at the Gov. Ball, but felt so fatigued that evening, as to be unable to muster the strength for going. In a few weeks I shall be a little freer, and must then have the pleasure of seeing you all at your new home.

Pray thank Mr. Deakin and through him Mr. Gillies for kindly granting us the geographic vote.4 I will see, that the best possible use is made of it.

I will send you a copy of the Key next week. The 2 spare ones I should like, by this mail to go to Dr Masters and Sir Jos Hooker

The Estimates for the Chief Secretary for the year ending 30 June 1889 included a grant of £1,000 to the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia, Victorian Branch (Estimates of expenditure for the year ending 30th June 1889, Victoria, Parliamentary paper 1889/B 9, p. 23). The grant was included in the vote for the Chief Secretary passed in Parliament on 2 October 1888 (Victoria, Votes and proceedings of the Legislative Assembly, session 1888, vol. 1, p. 143). At the meeting of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia, Victorian Branch held on 1 March 1889, the honorary treasurer reported that he had received from the Treasury '£1000 voted by Parliament in aid of the Societies exploration fund' (Transactions and proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (Victorian Branch), vol. 7, part 1, p.12).
