Weihnachts Abend Melbourne

Christmas Eve Melbourne

Today a substantial ornithological collection from eastern Australia1 is packed for you, noble Friend, and it will go off immediately after the holidays to you. Many new things should be among them for your institute. What you already have amply, I should like to ask you to send to the grand-ducal museum in Oldenburg, since his Royal Highness particularly honoured me in the previous year, and I should like to show my gratitude.2

I am just writing the presidential address for the Therapeutic Section of the Intercolonial Medical Congress, which is to be held at the beginning of January, and for which about 450 physicians have registered!, after recently completing the 7th edition of the work on the useful plants3 and the dichotomous flora of Victoria.4 At the beginning of February, when the extra work for the International Exhibition5 is over, I shall deliver the presidential address to the Geographical Society.6 I also function as president in our large Liedertafel, which four times a year provides classical music to several thousand listeners, apart from the "Men's Evenings". Towards the end of next year as president for 1889 I have to lead the perhaps thousandfold-attended meeting of the Australasian Association,7 that corresponds to the Versammlung deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte 8 and the British Association.9 So you see that I am very occupied together with the daily heavy official work.

Expressing my best wishes for the New Year to you and yours

Ferd. von Mueller.

The Paris Exhibition10 will also impose many extra duties on me.

A packing list in the Stuttgart archives corresponding to this consignment is headed 'Richmond & Clarence Rivers N. S. Wales'. One bird is also listed as from Kings Island, while a box of Phasmids from Queensland and a box containing a stuffed Murray lobster were also included. There is a note, not in M's hand: 'The skins are all good, and have only recently been shot'. M has written: 'Wird in einer Kiste nächste Woche an Watson & Scull abgehen. 29/12/88 Mit besten Neujahrs Gruss | Ferd von Mueller' [It will go in a crate next week to Watson & Scull. 20/12/88 With best New Year's greeting | Ferd. von Mueller]. There are other annotations made in Stuttgart that reflect the annotations on this letter.
