From Ferdinand von Mueller to David Lindsay   25 Jan 1889

Melbourne,

25./1./89.

It affords me much pleasure to recommend David Lindsay Esqr, F.R.G.S. for the position of Shire-Engineer and Surveyor of Portland,1 for which position he is eminently qualified by his professional standing and experiences. Moreover Mr Lindsay is known to me as a Gentleman of high principles and agreable kindly disposition, so that the choice, should it fall on him, will be a particularly happy one.

Baron Von Mueller,

M.D., Ph.D., FRS.

Vic.

In the 19th century, a testimonial was typically sent to the person requesting one and treated as an open document for use by the recipient, often by printing it along with the other testimonials supplied. Occasionally the letter might concern a specific role but was still sent to the person requesting it, who then forwarded it; see, for example, M to J. Hector, 5 December 1870 (in this edition as 70-12-05a),

The item is among Lindsay's personal papers.
