To Alfred Deakin   5 February 1889

Melbourne,

5 febr. 1889

The honorable Alfr. Deakin, M.L.A.,

Chief Secretary

Sir.

I have the honor to submit an application from Mr Renner1 for a week's leave of absense on condition, that this time of absense be deducted from his three weeks usual leave. In recommending this application to your favorable consideration, I would beg to advise, that this present leave be granted on the above condition. The Museum of plants is situated on a rise away from buildings in a healthy place, and there is nothing in Mr Renner's departmental occupation to make him liable to illness. As the working hours are comparatively short and often holidays intervene, it would render the average-working time still shorter, if repeated absense on account of indisposition is granted without reducing the annual furlough.2

I have the honor to be,

Sir, your obedient servant

Ferd. von Mueller.

See G. Renner to M, 5 February 1889 (in this edition as 89-02-05a).
The Under Secretary, T. Wilson, approved M's request on 7 February and the file was forwarded to M who returned it the next day 'with best thanks'. See also G. Renner to M, 20 March 1889, in which Renner requested further sick leave, and M to T. Wilson, 20 March 1889 and the notes thereto.
