From Ferdinand von Mueller to Rudolf Virchow   19 Feb 1889

Ehrerbietig

der Ihre Ferd.von Mueller.

You were kind enough, noble Sir, to include the notice about the success of strychine injection against snake bite in your important journal.1 May I be permitted then to bring another favourable case to your kind notice. In Calcutta attempts with hydrodermic insertion of strychnine against the dreadful poison of the terrible Naja seem to have been tried only to a quite insignificant extent, in Bombay Province not at all; at any rate the experiments in India are up until now inadequate. I venture to send you a reprint of my opening address to the therapeutic section of the Melbourne Medical Congress.2 In it I recommended that the universities of the whole world might be asked to send delegates to the next congress of Australian physicians which will take place in Sydney in 1891. May I request you to kindly take this proposition, this German idea, into consideration; and should you, one of the greatest powers in medicine, approve this idea, then some encouraging words from you that could be submitted early to the Sydney Council would be very beneficial for this matter.

Respectfully

Your Ferd. von Mueller
