'French, C.' collected a specimen of Puccinia dichondrae in November 1887 from Cheltenham, Vic (MEL 1054152). This is probably Charles French Snr, but his son Charles H. French also collected fungi, including some before 1889.

FNI attributes the combination to Persoon, not Fries.

i.e. De Not. (= Guiseppe de Notararis).

King Island, Bass Strait, Tas.

FNI attributes the name to Linnaeus, not Fries.

Cooke uses the abbreviation 'Ag' for 'Agaricus' many times in the list. FNI does not report infrageneric names.

In FNI as Amanita gemmata, attributed to Gillet, not Fries.

FNI attributes the name to Linnaeus, not Fries.

FNI does not report infrageneric names; but Cooke (1892), pp. 22 ff. includes more than twenty species in Agaricus sub-genus Mycena.

FNI attributes the combination to Persoon, not Fries.

FNI does not report infrageneric names; but Cooke (1892), pp. 46-45 includes seven species in Agaricus sub-genus Inocybe.

FNI attributes the combination to Persoon, not Fries.

'Junior' in the sense of young or immature. See Phillips (1878) where Cooke in a 'Note on the above' wrote, in a discussion refuting the assertion, 'Dr. Quelet says that our Ag. atropunctus is his Omphalia atro-puncta (junior), and the Hygrophorus is his Omphalia atropuncta (vetustior)' p. 75. There are other instances in Cooke's publications where 'junior' is used in this sense; see for example Cooke (1885-6), p. 20, and Cooke (1892d), p. 106. (The editors are indebted to Dr Tom W. May for clarification of Cooke's usage in referring to younger versus older specimens.)

Cooke ends the page with a pencilled sloping line.

FNI attributes the name to Berkeley, not Fries.

FNI attributes the name to Persoon, not Fries.

Cooke has separated this list from the following items by a sloping line between '40' and '36'.

Not in FNI but in Cooke (1892), p. 313.

Tisdall's drawings (now in the library, Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, RB MSS A31) are sometimes accompanied by specimens, as in this case, shown here as an example of his material. Cooke's added notes to left of specimen and identification at bottom of frame; Tisdall's notes below the frame. The dimensions of Tisdall's pencilled frame are 22.9 X 10.2 cm. 89-03-26a_image01.jpg

The list is one of a number sent by Cooke that are now in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. This list comprises four pages, the back of each comprising either a MS extract from a publication on a species of fungus, or a pasted-on entry from a published text containing a description, all which have been struck through by Cooke. The species abstracted are not on this list. The bottom of the first page is annotated in pencil by J. H. Willis: '26 Mar. 1889'; the bottom of sheets 2, 3, and 4 are numbered in pencil in what may be another hand, although the numerals resemble large versions of Cooke's numbers in the list.

See notes to M. Cooke to M, 17 January 1885 for a discussion of Cooke's author attributions.
