From Ferdinand von Mueller to Robert Watson   8 Apr 1889

8/4/89.

R. Watson Esqr,

Engineer in Chief of Victorian Railways.

The Eucalyptus, of which you sent a branchlet with flowerbuds and fruits, also a small sample of wood, dear Mr Watson,1 is the Eucalyptus goniocalyx.2 This tree passes in Victoria generally as "Spotted Gumtree". Its timber is similar to that of the true Blue Gum-tree, and is as durable, particularly when the wood is obtained from slopes of hills and not from wet vallies.

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.

Eucalyptus goniocalyx

See R. Watson to M, 8 April 1889.

MS annotation: 'Sample A submitted by Mr Gourlay on behalf of A O'Keefe as Blue Gum from near Koorooman Black spur JRP 9/4/89'. A specimen collected in April 1889 from 'about Koorooman, Toora Track' is in the Melbourne Herbarium (MEL 1609112), under Eucalyptus cypellocarpa; M's herbarium label, naming the specimen as E. goniocalyx, attributes the collection to Watson.
