From Ferdinand von Mueller to Franz Stephani   26 Sep 1889

Assoc. for the advancement of science" giebt mir jetzt schon extra viel zu thun.

Best thanks for sending a reprint of your splendid paper, dear Mr Stephani;1 I know only too well from my own experience what extensive work often goes into only a few pages of printing!

I am pleased that you also thought so kindly of my own in this revision. Whenever no collector's name is on the printed label, I have been the collector myself, because with the printing of my name it seems unnecessary to also repeat it in writing. Bäuerlen, Hartmann,2 Karsten and Sayer have no great merit as cryptogam collectors. None would have collected such, had it not happened at my particular request and had these four not had considerable funds for their journeys from me. Of course I myself get out only rarely as a sixty year old!

Respectfully your

Ferd. von Mueller

The presidency for the Melbourne meeting of the Australian Association for the Advancement of Science now gives me already much extra to do.3

It is interesting to learn how the cryptogams of the New Guinea alps also give in plant geography some information on the phanerogams just worked up by me.

Stephani (1889) was printed in three parts. The first part of 7 pages opened with a compliment to M.

Carl Hartmann.

M had been appointed President of the Second Congress of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, to be held in Melbourne in January 1890.
