From Ferdinand von Mueller to Ralph Tate   5 Oct 1889

5/10/89.

As the printing of your flora proceeds so speedily, I am glad to learn,1 dear Prof. Tate, the Census of 18892 will not be out timely for you. So I though it best, to send you a spare-copy of the proof-sheets, which I have available at my Office. The only alteration, which I deem desirable, is the transfer of the Stackhousiaceae to near (next) Halorageae.3 You will have noticed the resemblance of Haloragis Gossei and the Loudonias to Stackhousia Brunonis &c All Menkeas have white or purplish petals, none yellow.

Am sorry troubling you, concerning Mr Tietkens plants, but it would be a pity to omit any in the addenda of the Census;4 these will go to the printer about the middle of this month. Names given by you to novelties will be acknowledged.

Pray express to Prof Spencer my gratifiication in going personally to Adelaide in the interest of the A. A. for the Adv. of Sc.5 Of course I will pay Mr Tietkens the highest value for the set, which I can possibly set on it.

The sub alpine plants of N. Guinea will be through the press by the end of this month, i.e. their descriptions6

Ever regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.

B89.12.03.

In his 'sequence of orders according to systematic affinity' in B89.12.03, p. 235, M places Halorageae before Stackhousieae (as M spelled it in this work), although they were not placed together in the body of the work, Stackhousieae on p. 44 and Halorageae, p. 85.

See also M to R. Tate, 30 September 1889 (in this edition as 89-09-30b), and M to R. Tate, November 1889 (in this edition as 89-11-00h). In the event, B89.12.03 did not include any addenda.

B89.13.11.

MS annotation by Tate: 'in my book', i.e. Tate (1890). Panicum argenteum and Wedelia verbesinoides are included in the 'Key' that makes up the first part of the volume and had evidently been printed before these species were notified to Tate, indicating that he had already recognised them as SA species. The other names are included in the 'Classified list…' but not in the 'Key'; and some but not all are also included in an addendum of corrections to the 'Key'.
