To Walter Bates1    6 April 1890

6/4/90

From the enclosed you will see, dear Mr Bates, how sad an accident occured to poor Mr Gribble.2 I wrote to him that you would not press him for some little time for payment, so that he could recover meanwhile from his losses and distress.

He is sure, to come early up to his obligations at the RGS.

Had not the recent extra-expenses during the Melbourne-meeting of the Austral. Association for the Advancement of Science and other late unforeseen obligations exhausted my slender current means, I would render payment for the Rev. Gentleman myself at once.3

Regardfully

your

Ferd von Mueller.
