From Ferdinand von Mueller to the Mildura Cultivator   [June 1890]

[Baron von Mueller has kindly sent us a small stock of seeds of the Indigofera or Indigo plant. We shall try a few in the Cultivator garden, and shall be happy to distribute the balance as far as they will go.]1

Indigofera

The extract is followed by a description of the plant's growth and cultivation requirements, closely following the text under Indigofera tinctoria in M's Select plants (B85.12.03, B88.12.01), interspersed with comments specifically relating to Mildura conditions and a reminder that 'it is one of the products for which bonuses are offered by the Victorian Government'. The writer was probably using the 1885 edition of M's book, since the article includes only the value of import to Britain in 1884 and not the value for 1886 that was also included in the 1888 edition.

Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Our experiment column: The Indigo plant', Mildura cultivator, 3 July 1890, p. [4]. (Pagination of the issue is in error; the page on which the entry appears is numbered '5'.) The newspaper was a weekly, and the most likely date that the packet was sent is late June.
