To Otto Nordstedt   3 June 1890

I am indebted to you for your friendliness, respected Doctor, in having taken my proposal for an illustrated monograph of Characeae into such rapid consideration. The matter is certainly not urgent, but it would be good if a preliminary plan could be drafted, so that the cost estimates for the support of the project could be produced. It seems to me the work could best appear in casual decades, perhaps like my Eucalypts, Acacias, Salsolaceae, Myoporineae and Candolleaceae. Then whenever 10 plates and descriptions are ready, a fascicle could just be published. The plates should be unnumbered, and so also each have a page without page number, so that after the completion of the work, which would require many years, the whole could be systematically arranged. This plan has the advantage that only such species need to be illustrated that are to hand in complete specimens; but it would be desirable that each decade contain species from several parts of the world, so that Australia would also be represented in each.1

Respectfully and wishing you every good thing

Ferd. von Mueller

I am approaching the years of a septuagenarian, so no longer travel and collect, therefore I must be satisfied when correspondents only send fragments to me.

Acacia

Candolleaceae

Characeae

Myoporineae

Salsolaceae

In 1891 Nordstedt published ten plates with text of Australian Characeae, Nordstedt (1891). No further parts were published.
