Eben, verehrter Herr Professor, kommt wieder ein Packet Algen für Sie bei mir an von unserem braven Freunde J. Br. Wilson. Das Packet ist zu gross, um mit der Buchpost gesandt zu werden; so soll es mit der nächsten Packet-Post, am 5 Aug, an Sie abgehen; es ist hier nicht geöffnet.
Erlauben Sie mir die Vorfrage, ob Ihre Universität auch gelegentlich verdiente Gelehrte honoris causa zu Ph.D. promovirt? In diesem Falle möchte es Ihrer Erwägung zu empfehlen sein, ob Sie unseren Freund in Geelong auf diese Weise ehren und überraschen können. Er weiss nicht, dass ich diese Vorfrage mache; wenn also nichts geschähe, so wäre ja niemand compromittirt.

Respected Professor, another parcel of algae has just arrived at my place for you from our worthy friend J. Br. Wilson. The parcel is too large to be sent by book post, so it is to go off to you with the first parcel post on 5 August. It has not been opened here.
Permit me the preliminary enquiry, whether your university also occasionally confers PhDs on deserving savants honoris causa. In this case might I recommend to your consideration whether you could honour and surprise our friend in Geelong in this way. He does not know that I am making this enquiry, thus if nothing happens, no one would be compromised.1
